WHY CAMPAIGN FOR BIAFRA IS SENSELESS - SENATOR BUKAR

The senator expressed his opinion speaking with Daily Post on Friday, December 11, in Abuja. According to him, if for any reason such struggle is necessary, it should be through dialogue which is the best approach in a democratic society.

We have had Biafra before and I think it is high time we sit down and tell ourselves the truth. In democracy, if you have things like that, you don’t start asking for secession, but you can start asking for your right.
If we have made mistakes before, then we have to own up to that responsibility rather than behaving funny so that our feelings can be understood to others,

 he said. The lawmaker noted that Igbos have benefited from the nation’s magnanimity, which has made them richer compared to people from other geographical zones.

I think we have existed for over a 100 years and we all need each other. If you look at the people of the South East in terms of population, you find them all over the country with their living conditions better than people from other zones. So it does not make sense for them to be asking for things they know are impossible,

he said.

Senator Bukar noted that those young people who are calling for secession simply do not know what happened over four decades. Therefore, he called on the older generation to tell them what happened in the past so as to avert a repetition. He also commended South East governors and traditional rulers for their effort to make agitators lead a dialogue with the federal government.

I think the South East governors and traditional rulers have been talking to them and probably those behind them may toe the path of dialogue which is a good development and I commend them for that,

he added.

Earlier this week, Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture, said that the agitation for Biafra was legitimate but noted that activists should take appropriate channel to ventilate their grievance and discontent. According to him, the government should address the issues, using religious leaders as appealing voice to aggrieved people.

Meanwhile, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra declared that any dialogue with the government must be lead by the detained Radio Biafra director, Nnamdi Kanu.
