I ALMOST JOINED MANCHESTER UNITED - JORGEN KLOPP

Jurgen Klopp has revealed he was once approached to become Manchester United’s new manager likely when it became clear Sir Alex Ferguson was leaving the club.

The 48 year old left Dortmund at the end of last season and joined Liverpool in September after Jurgen Rodgers was sacked.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the German said Manchester United approached him in April though he did not give which year.

He also says he didn’t want to leave because he was loyal and preparing for the new season.

He said:
We spoke. We spoke not a lot but, for me, it was a lot. It was a big honor, the whole talk, to be honest. “There was a time [when United were interested] but I could not leave Dortmund. That is it. You are in April and you are in the middle of the planning for next season.
You have this player and this player and this player who is coming in but then you are not there any more? That doesn’t work. Not in my life anyway.
I did not hear about a real offer but, if there was, I could not have done it. I first had to finish the job with Dortmund and then think about other things.
Maybe that is not the smart way but that is my way. Of course I was loyal to Dortmund. It was the same at Mainz.

WATFORD POCKETS £200M IF IGHALO STAYS

Reports in some quarters that Watford striker Odion Ighalo may be heading out of Vicarage road in January has triggered the reaction of Troy Deeney, the club’s captain.

According to Deeney, Ighalo staying at Watford beyond January will be more profitable for Watford as the club will earn £200 million.

Deeney told Watford Observer:
Odion is not going in January. “So other teams can want Iggy (Ighalo) as much as they want but I know Gino (Pozzo, Watford’s owner) and it wouldn’t make sense to sell.
Why sell a striker when you are trying to stay in the Premier League? What would be the value in selling Odion now and getting what £20 million? £25 million?
Or you keep him, stay up and get something like £200 million in TV money. It is simple business maths. We will not sell him.
Odion hasn’t come in telling everyone he wants to leave. We just laugh at that (Ighalo leaving in January).

Ighalo has scored 14 goals in the EPL so far this season, with seven in the consecutive last six games. Having scored 30 goals in 75 games in all competition this year, Ighalo has won the bragging rights as the top scorer in England for 2015.

He is the first ever Watford player to score in six consecutive English top flight games.

IGHALO WINS EPL PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Super Eagles of Nigeria and Watford FC striker Odion Ighalo has won the Premier League player of the month of December.

Ighalo won the award alongside his manager Quique Sanchez Flores who was named Premier League manager for the month of December.

Ighalo scored a total of  five goals in the month, including two in the Vicarage Road win over Liverpool, to take his tally for the season to 13, tied for third in the Premier League behind Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy.

A happy Ighalo said:
It was a great month for me, but not me alone, for the team as well. We really worked hard and got as many points as we could get. It’s very good for us and we want to keep going.
When the gaffer took over he really told us what he wanted, and I worked hard in pre-season. I knew the step up from the Championship to the Premier League would be difficult because I was going to meet more experienced defenders and big teams, so I have put a lot of work in, and that has been paying off.
I am a Watford player. I have a five-year contract, I am happy and the fans love me. I am enjoying my football here and I am not in a hurry to go anywhere.

Watford won their first three games in the month to climb the table and only lost their unbeaten record just after Christmas when they were beaten 2-1 by Tottenham, a result that came after a memorable 3-0 win over Liverpool and a fine 2-2 draw at Chelsea.

The Hornets have since dropped to 10th on the back of three successive defeats, but coach Sanchez Flores is honored to be the first manager to claim the prize in the club’s history.

He said:
It’s a big honor for me and I am really pleased.
This is for all the staff who are working with me and for the players of course. Without them it is impossible to get this award.
This is also for the fans. They have supported the team a lot. This is all a new experience for me, I am new in the Premier League, but this month has been very special.

Ighalo beat the likes of Mezut Ozil (Arsenal), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Marko Arnautovic (Stoke City), Romelu Lukaku (Everton) and Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City) to the award. Ighalo clinched the award for the first time having being shortlisted three times in five months.

SUPER LEAGUE TO REPLACE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AND EUROPA LEAGUE

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of European Clubs Association (ECA) and chief executive of Bayern Munich says a future European Super League is a possibility. The league would consist of Europe’s biggest soccer clubs from Italy, Germany, Spain, England and France.

I don’t rule out that in the future a European league will be founded, in which the biggest teams from Italy, Germany, England, Spain and France will play
Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported him as saying.

The football system will adjust to the new challenges of globalization
Rummenigge said at an event in Milan on Tuesday.

The ECA however released a statement saying an supposed Super League has never been discussed.

There’s a lot of discussion around the future of European competitions at the moment, as always ahead of a new competition cycle
said an ECA spokesman.

However, the idea of a European league as reported did not form part of any discussion at ECA.

Proposals for a so-called European Super League, featuring the top clubs from around the continent, have come and gone over the years.

In 1998, Milan-based sports marketing company Media Partners held talks with leading clubs including AC Milan and Manchester United in 1998 as they sought to build support for a breakaway league however FIFA threatened national associations, clubs and players with suspension if they linked up with the proposed Super League.

European soccer’s governing body UEFA finally killed the plan by expanding their premier competition, the Champions League, offering clubs a greater slice of television and sponsorship revenue, and upping prize money.

MAN UTD READY TO SACK LVG, DUTCHMAN BEGS FOR MORE TIME

Manchester United owners the Glazer family are set to sack club manager Louis Van Gaal after seeing their patience tested to the limit with the clubs inspiring performances this season.

According to Daily Star UK, the Glazer’s are unhappy with the manner in which United defeated Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup over weekend.

Rooney scored a 90th minute penalty to earn United a spot in the next round and registered only two shots in the whole game.

This decision comes after the owners privately backed Van Gaal and said he would not be sacked in Christmas.

The players are bored, the fans are bored; everyone’s bored. The manager looks bored as well. Every time you come to Old Trafford you see this – negative football
United great Paul Scholes said after the 1 – 0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Chief executive of main kit sponsor Adidas, Herbert Hainer was also critical of United.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the former English champions have engaged super-agent Jorge Mendes to broker a deal with Manchester United.

JORGE MENDES NEGOTIATING JOSE MOURINHO'S APPOINTMENT AT MANCHESTER UNITED

Jose Mourinho could be moving to Manchester United sooner than expected with the popular football agent Jorge Mendes in negotiations with the former English champions as they look to appoint the Portuguese.

Mendes handles the likes of the Real Madrid attackers James Rodriguez and Cristiano Ronaldo and the Chelsea loanee Radamel Falcao, and he is known for having a smooth relationship with clubs like AS Monaco, FC Porto, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Transfer insider Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Manchester United are looking to appoint Jose Mourinho as Louis Van Gaal’s replacement and Valencia attacker Andre Gomes.

Andre Gomes is a target for Napoli and Juventus but it is believed the attacker will snub the two clubs to sign for Manchester United if Jose Mourinho moves to the club.

It is, however, believed that Valencia will not sell the attacker in January.

PEP GUARDIOLA APOLOGIZES TO EPL MANAGERS

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola, who will leave Bundesliga champions this summer, has apologized to the managers in the English Premier League who are feeling the heat with the manager set to arrive next season.

The famous coach, who has won 19 titles as coach with both Barcelona and Bayern, will leave his role at the club in 2016 with Italian tactician Carlo Ancelotti already announced as his replacement. Speculation surrounding his future continues with Manchester United or Manchester City move. Arsenal and Chelsea  have also been linked with Spaniard’s move.

The coach has admitted he is set to move to the Premier League at the end of the current season.

Guardiola said:
I am sorry. Normally in my career as a trainer and as a player. I respect my colleagues a lot. So I am sorry. It wasn’t my intention.I will reveal my new club once I have actually signed a contract.

I AM VERY BORED BY MANCHESTER UNITED - LVG

The Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has said that he is bored and even angry watching his team play.

Van Gaal said:
There are matches that I have enjoyed very much. Against Chelsea I have enjoyed it but the result was 0-0 and we could have lost. There are also matches where I’m very bored or angry because we are not disorganizing our opponent’s defense, but that is football.

He said:
It’s not every match that every club is playing fantastically, football that attracts the people. But that is also why the fans are coming. They can criticize but they can also cheer the players.
They have been ironic [against Sheffield United], but that’s also an expression of the fans and that’s good. Also the players were frustrated and the fans are frustrated. You have to know that as a player, as a manager and the fans that we can’t always play fantastic football and that was also the case in former days when it didn’t happen. I’m sorry about that but it is like that
the coach noted.

Van Gaal has also come under fire for not getting off of his seat and encouraging players from the touchline.

He commented:
I’m not Sir Alex Ferguson, as you know. Everybody is different and I don’t believe in yelling from the sidelines. I believe in communication during the week, during the preparation and I believe in my players who have to perform.

EPL CLUBS REVEAL JANUARY TRANSFER PLANS

Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal and his Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger have let slip on their plans in the January transfer window. Both managers were speaking in the post match conferences in the FA Cup.

Manchester United defeated Sheffield Wednesday 1 - 0 thanks to Wayne Rooney’s 90th minute penalty while Arsenal came from behind to defeat Sunderland 3 - 1 with Joel Campbell, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud finding themselves on the score sheet.

Wenger said January transfer window plan is to sign just one player; Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny whose arrival is imminent.

He said:
I believe that the next step is to get [Tomas] Rosicky back, [Danny] Welbeck back, [Alexis] Sanchez back, [Jack] Wilshere back and maybe we will get one player in [Elneny].

Meanwhile Manchester United boss, Louis Van Gaal has suggested he would not be conducting any business in the January transfer window.

Van Gaal says he needs creative players but it would be difficult to sign anyone.

He said:
I don’t think we shall do business in January.
You cannot say that [for certain] because when there is a chance to make the selection better, then we shall do it. [But] I don’t think that we shall do that.
I have said also in transfer period that we need creative players, with speed. And we don’t have that too much.
[Juan] Mata is playing on the right side and is doing fantastically. He has always a big contribution for our team. But he is not a right winger in the profile that I have.
It’s not so easy to chase players who are better than Mata.

I DESERVE AFRICAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD - AUBAMEYANG

2015 African player of the year Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has reacted to his win at the 2015 Glo-CAF Awards by saying he deserves it. Second placed Yaya Toure suggested in a recent interview that he deserved to be crowned because he won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

But going by Aubameyang’s acceptance speech, it seems the Gabon and Dortmund feels he is fully deserving of the award. He said:
I thank the people of Gabon, this award is for them. I want to thank my teammates in the national team and also at Dortmund. It is their work that helps me to score goals. I worked hard and I merit the award.

He added:
For parents of the youth of Africa, please give your kids a chance to realize their dreams.

CARLO ANCELOTTI REJECTED MANCHESTER UNITED FOR BAYERN

Carlo Ancelotti refused the chance to replace an about to be sacked Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United to take over at Bayern Munich next season. Ancelotti has previously indicated an interest in returning to the Premier League after leaving Real Madrid last season but despite being approached by United chief executive Ed Woodward back in November, rejected the offer.

According to the Daily Mail, Ancelotti refused because he was already in negotiations with Bayern Munich to take over from Pep Guardiola in the summer of 2016.

The report reads:
Ancelotti’s decision to join Bayern was not set in stone when Woodward first made contact and the Italian has made no secret during recent interviews of his love for English football.
Sources close to Ancelotti hinted that the Germans made him feel ‘more wanted’ and that the Italian had ‘great confidence in the existing structures’ in Bavaria.

Despite United winning just one of their last nine fixtures in all competitions, it is believed Woodward is still “desperate” to see Van Gaal turn it around, given that the Dutchman was Woodward’s top choice for the role.

Jose Mourinho is under consideration, but Van Gaal’s assistant Ryan Giggs is now the most likely replacement for Van Gaal.

The report concludes:
In the light of Ancelotti’s rejection and fears at United that Mourinho’s temperament could prove divisive, there is now a growing belief that the current assistant manager Ryan Giggs is the most likely to succeed Van Gaal, when the Dutchman eventually leaves.

PHOTOS FROM REAL MADRID FIRST TRAINING UNDER ZIDANE

It's no longer news to majority that Rafa Benitez has been sacked and that Zinedine Zidane has been appointed new coach of Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, the former England international David Beckham has said that the new Real Madrid coach, Zinedine Zidane, is the best man for the job.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid player stated this on his Instagram handle hours after news broke that Rafa Benitez has been relieved of his duties.

Beckham said:
Does it get any better than this?? A man that has been the best at a game we all love , taking over of a club that myself and many more people love. Someone with drive , passion and also doesn’t accept failure on any level.
Taking over from a manager that has huge experience and respect in the game , but taking on a position that he will relish.

SEE THE 5 PLAYERS MOURINHO ALMOST RUINED THEIR CAREER

No doubt, ousted Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho has been penned-down as one of the best football coaches that has graced planet earth.

Not only is he regarded by a number of players, coaches, and commentators as one of the greatest and most successful managers in the world, the presence of ‘The Special One’ has electrified the football world especially for his antics and ‘mind games’.

However, as good as Mourinho is, there are players his tactics almost ruined their career.

1. Daniel Sturridge:

Sensational striker who currently plays for Liverpool FC. He felt “deprived” when he did not have the opportunity to express himself at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho.

Luck came his way when Brendan Rodgers pulled his £12million master stroke in the transfer market and paired Sturridge with Luis Suarez. That combination got over 50 goals at the 2013/2014 season.

2. Mikel Obi:

Great Nigerian midfielder. John Michael Nchekwube Obinna, known as John Obi Mikel, joined Chelsea in 2006 months after he was adjudged the second most valuable player at the u-20 World Cup. The 28-year-old was an attacking midfielder, but with manager Mourinho’s first spell at Stamford Bridge, Mikel played in the midfield alongside Joe Cole, Michael Essien, Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Malouda and few others.
With time, he occupied the defensive midfield for Chelsea but showed great scoring potentials whenever he was on national duty, scoring a number of goals for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

However, the return of ‘The Special One’ condemned the Nigerian to bench for most part of the 2014/2015 season at Chelsea.

With the sacking of Mourinho as Chelsea manager, interim coach, Guus Hiddink has rejuvenated Mikel’s game. With Chelsea’s 3 – 0 win away to Crystal Palace, Mikel was awarded the man of the match; an indication he is still a great player.

3. Juan Mata:

Very skilful left-footer. The Spaniard won Chelsea’s Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013, playing a pivotal role for the Blues.

However, at a point, Mourinho condemned Mata to bench for an awful long time, an action which Chelsea fans considered “unfair”. At his exit at Stamford Bridge, ‘The Special One’ apologised he did not make the Spainard “a better player”.

He said: “I feel sorry that I didn’t make him happy, but football is football and I build a team around Oscar in that position,” Chelsea boss.

Mata moved to Manchester United and has since beaten his Chelsea goal tally in 22 fewer matches for the Red Devils.

The Spanish midfielder moved to Old Trafford in January 2014 for a hefty £37.1million and has made his mark at the Theatre of Dreams.

4. Juan Cuadrado:

The Colombian star moved to Stamford Bridge for a reported £26 million with the hopes that his combination with Hazard will become a thorn in the flesh for defenders in England.

Yet, the former ‘Blues’ manager gave the former Fiorentina goal poacher little or no chance to showcase himself. The 27-year-old attacking maestro who is currently on a season-long loan with Juventus scored 20 goals for Fiorentina before joining Chelsea.

However, under the ex Chelsea manager, Cuadrado only managed to appear 13 times in the 2014/2015 season with no goals; and in his new club Juventus, the Colombian has featured 14 times and has netted twice with the season just half way.

5. Petr Cech:

The Czech goalkeeper completed a £10m switch to the Gunners after the continual use of new arrival, Thibaut Courtois, as he was forced to the bench.

At his exit at Chelsea, Mourinho said: “Petr Cech has been a great servant for Chelsea for 11 years and helped this club to win almost everything there is to win.”

“I always said I wanted him to stay but I understand Petr needed to move on to play first team football every week.

At Arsenal, Cech has been a major force that has helped Arsene Wenger’s men to the top of the EPL table after 20 games.

The 33-year-old has featured for the Gunners in 20 games and has been crucial for the club, making quite a number of great saves.

RAFA BENITEZ SACKED, ZINEDINE ZIDANE APPOINTED AS NEW REAL MADRID COACH

Rafa Benitez has been sacked by Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane has been named as his replacement. Florentino Perez  who is the owner of Los Blancos is said to be displeased with the recent poor form of the club as they have now slipped to third and four points behind league leaders Atletico Madrid.

Benitez who has also coached English clubs Liverpool and Chelsea has endured a tough season at the Bernabeu since taking over in June 2015, having fall-outs with some key players of the club. Their 2 – 2 draw against Valencia simply forced the management to take the crucial decision.

Real president Florentino Perez said:
I am here to say that the board has just decided, in a difficult decision, especially for me, to end contract of Rafa as first-team coach. I would like to make it clear that he is a great professional. Zinedine Zidane knows better than anyone what it is like to stand at the front and lead Real Madrid. Throughout his career he has always been able to face up to huge challenges. He is one of the greatest players of all time. Zinedine, this is your club, your stadium and you have all our support. Zidane you are, from this moment, the trainer of Real Madrid.

A top source to the club revealed that the three-time world footballer of the year prefer a summer change but won’t turn down the chance to manage the ten-time European champions.

Revered Spanish football expert Guillem Balague spoke with Sky Sports and suggested that club president Florentino Perez might have lost confidence in Benitez many weeks ago.

He said:
Perez often says the opposite things privately. Over the last few weeks, he’s been saying Benitez is not the problem, he’s the solution. That’s what he said publicly.
At the same time, he held a poll before Christmas with season ticket holders on who they would like as a replacement. He was was just waiting for the right moment to do what seems inevitable.
It’s quite clear Benitez doesn’t have the confidence of the board or Perez. Perez wants Jose Mourinho to come back, there is no doubt about it, but if he did that right now he’ll have to get rid of five or six players, as some of the big players at Real Madrid do not want Jose Mourinho back.
So how Florentino Perez sort that out? I don’t know. It won’t be now, it won’t be for a while. Who he is trying to convince is Zidane, but Florentino is not 100 per cent convinced that Zidane himself is the solution.
So with no clear alternative, all that debate is happening at board level, and with Florentino and his entourage.

An official statement from the club is expected soon.

NEYMAR IS THE BEST FORWARD OF THE SEASON SO FAR

Brazilian star Neymar has been named the best left-sided forward of the season.

According to the Goal’s poll, Neymar claimed victory with 46 % of the votes, while Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo is second with 31 % and Douglas Costa is third with 7 %.

Neymar will now take his place in Goal’s team of the season so far as we continue to ask readers to vote for their best player in each position at the halfway point of the 2015-16 campaign
 the source said.

ODION IGHALO WANTS MANCHESTER UNITED MOVE

Super Eagles and Watford striker has never hidden his fondness of Manchester United and the big man has hinted that he would approve of a move to the club if the former English Champions make an offer. The January transfer window is now open and clubs are free to operate.

Ighalo, who has been one of the best players this season spoke about speculations of a transfer to Spain and Italy where he has played already with Granada and Watford respectively. While his club have already he is “for sale under any circumstances”, Ighalo says he wouldn’t say no if United make an offer for his services.

He said in a radio interview:
I have also heard the speculations about Atletico Madrid and Roma, but I have played in both Italy and Spain, and I now want to play in England.
Only God knows what will happen, but I don’t think I will move in January. But would I say no to Manchester United if they come calling?

Ighalo has been in fine goal scoring form this season in the Premier League. The striker has 14 goals after 18 round of fixtures in the league.

NEYMAR SET TO JOIN MANCHESTER UNITED

Latest transfer rumors indicate that Manchester United are reportedly ready to trigger Neymar’s £140million release clause as talks over his contract with Barcelona broke down. According to French publication Le 10 Sport, Louis Van Gaal will make a move to land the Brazilian to Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Neymar who joined the Catalan giants from Santos in 2013 has two-and-a-half years to run on his current deal with Barcelona.

However, renewal talks have reportedly stalled and United are seemingly ready to take advantage.

TELL ME WHERE, JUST TELL ME WHERE - GIROUD

Olivier Giroud, the main forward of Arsenal, states that his club has great players that can win the Premier League.

He rejected suggestions made that the Gunners needed to be strengthened in three areas in January:
“Tell me where! Just tell me where! I will explain the opposite judgement.”

Speaking with the Daily Mirror UK, he explains:
“We have very good players as well on the bench, young players waiting to come in. They are very talented. I am not worried about it. Danny Welbeck will come back in a month and a half. Theo Walcott can play up front, Joel is Campbell doing well with his national team up front. If I am less good or get injured, we still have a solution.”
“To be champions in a season  and I know that because I was a champion with Montpellier you need talent, of course, but you need a bit of luck and sometimes you cannot play a fantastic game. We have experienced players like [Mathieu] Flamini, Per [Mertesacker], Petr [Cech] and even Lolo [Laurent Koscielny]. We have a good relationship between young players and experienced players. The older players need to bring confidence to the youngest and lead them. That is what I try to do sometimes. I always encourage them and show them, maybe, in a nice way, the best solution,”
Giroud added.

The 29-year-old said:
All together, we are going to do it. We have a very good squad. We can play every competition and we will focus 100 per cent.

RONALDINHO IS COMING TO EPL

The former Barcelona and Brazil international super star Ronaldinho has had more than one call from England as he attempts to find his next club.

Ronaldinho’s brother Roberto in an interview with The Times said that the former Ballon d’Or winner has fielded “more than one call” from England.

However, he noted:
Asia or the United States are more likely. My brother is a competitor. He loves to win: that is what people do not realize about him. He still wants to play. He has never had serious injuries; his body is in perfect condition. I think he has three or four years left to him, maybe more.

IGHALO REJECTS ATLETICO MADRID'S OFFER

The English club insists the Nigerian is happy to stay and they have no intention of selling him amid rumors he could leave for Atletico Madrid Watford have insisted Odion Ighalo is not for sale despite reports linking the striker to Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid.

The rapid forward joined Vicarage Road from Granda in 2014 and helped the Hornets secure promotion to the English Premier League and finished 2015 with a calendar-year haul of 30 goals, 14 of which have come in 19 Premier League games.

Ighalo’s performances have roused interest from several clubs including the Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid who are in the market for a new forward.

But Watford have moved to deny the reports and claim neither player nor club has any intention of cutting his stay in the English topflight short, according to Sky Sports News.

Ighalo has formed a potent strike partnership with Troy Deeney and the Watford captain has also laughed off any suggestion that Ighalo, who is under contract until summer 2020, could be poached this month.
